Deeside Activity Park’s Bonfire Night was a Great Success!
Deeside Activity Park’s Annual Bonfire and Fireworks held yesterday on Sunday 6th November was hailed as a huge success by organisers.
“We can’t be 100 percent sure but we think there was between 600 and 800 people at the park enjoying the bonfire, fireworks and of course our very own Cairnton Aberdeen Angus BBQ. That is almost double if not triple the amount of guests that were here last year!” said Ken Howie, Owner of the park and also the person who put on such a wonderful display of fireworks.
The Evening was just perfect cold but very pleasant. E & M Lees had provide a courtesy bus from Lumphanan Square for local residents to come to the park to save on parking spaces, which I think was just as well as the cars were lining the road on both sides for quite some stretch from the park.
“The BBQ went down a real treat as usual, in fact we ran out of rolls, soup and onions by the time we got to the last 15 in the queue. We are wondering if we need to start making burgers for next year already? “said Fiona from DAP. “This morning we have already started to build next year’s bonfire.”
The Bonfire night is only one of a string of special events that are held at Deeside Activity Park over the year, the next event is the Santa’s sleigh rides and Santa’s Grotto on 18th December.

Being green just by having fun!
A local Deeside company is adding to its green credentials by upgrading its children’s play area. Deeside Activity Park in Aboyne has had an indoor and outdoor play area for a few years’ now but at the end of June the large bouncy castle will be getting put into storage to make way for a brand new greener ball pit and soft play area.
“The bouncy castle is very popular but it is getting a bit tired and in order to save on our carbon footprint a bit more we decided to get something that doesn’t use any electricity. A soft play area and ball pit was an obvious choice and I know a lot of our regular guests are getting very excited about it” Said Fiona McIver of the park.
The park is having a free open day on Wednesday 29th June for any parents and kids to come along and try out the new ball pit and soft play area. The area will be open from 10 am till 3 pm and there will be cakes and balloons and a colouring in competition.
The park is always looking for ways not only to add more to the park but also ways in which to do things greener, also changing in the indoor play area is the installation of 2 new heaters that are attached to the parks wood pellet boiler.

Santa gets a new form of transport while Rudolph gets the day off!
Santa arrived in style on a new form of transport to his grotto at a local company yesterday. Rudolph was said to be very pleased to be given the day off!
The Santa’s Grotto was organised at Deeside Activity Park with Santa arriving on one of the park’s newest and exciting activity, their Mattrack Powerboards. Deeside Activity Park is one of the first places in the UK to have the powerboards and they are proving very popular already. As the winters are getting snowier then the park have invested in these boards to have alternatives to their other activities.
These Powerboards are stand on, track propelled snow machines that carve through the snow like a snowboard. The Powerboards offer fun and action of snowboarding without going to the ski slopes.
“It was great to have Santa here at the park, all the children got to visit him in his grotto, after him and his elf arrived on the powerboards. We did also have our groundhog sleigh rides happening throughout the day” said Fiona McIver, sales and Marketing for the park.

Local Company Gets Gold for Green Business
A local Deeside company has won gold this week without even being in Delhi. This gold award is for the Green Tourism Business Scheme and this company has shown it takes into account the needs of the environment, local residents, businesses, and visitors; now and in the future.
Not seen usually for its green credentials Deeside Activity Park has been increasing its sustainability considerably over the past 8 years. “It is excellent to be getting accredited with this award; the park does so much to keep down its carbon footprint and be green. We have a wood pellet boiler, an automatic composter, a rainwater harvester, recycling plant and many more exciting sustainable projects going on at the park. We even held our first earth day here at the park in April.” Said Fiona, Sales and Marketing for the park.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme has been running since 1997 and with over 2000 members across the whole of the UK and Ireland, it is the largest and most established scheme of its type in the World. In Scotland the GTBS was developed in partnership with VisitScotland and it is recognised by UK national and regional government as a crucial part of its drive towards sustainability. The aim of the scheme is to build on this strong position and ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of sustainable tourism in the future.
“Everyone at Deeside Activity Park had their hand in winning this award, from the guests who recycle their rubbish, the office staff that go to measures to reduce paper usage, the kitchen staff that ensure we use local produce and the outside staff who ensure the mud is washed off the machines with only water from the rainwater harvester!” said Joyce Tomlinson head cook at The Park.
Deeside Activity Park has worked hard to gain this award by putting in place a plan to develop the green side of its business over the past couple of years and it will continue to grow on this with many other projects in the pipeline. Recently the park was a finalist in the Northern Star Business Awards 2010 for the Sustainability Award.

Deeside Activity Park working in partnership with Lumphanan Golf Club
Lumphanan Golf Club and Deeside Activity Park have been discussing how to make the best use of their facilities for the benefit of both businesses and their customers.
‘It is wonderful to be working alongside Lumphanan Golf Club to offer our guests an opportunity to do some activities at the park or have lunch here and then to go on to play at the course. It’s the best of both worlds.’ said Fiona McIver, Sales and Marketing for the Park.
The agreement will also give companies the opportunity to send golfers to the course when they have large corporate bookings, giving them an additional choice of activity. The first joint venture in June was a great success. Lumphanan Golf Club, a 9 hole course with spectacular views over Deeside, reopened in its current form in 2000 and has a strong membership within the local Deeside community. Working with the Park is just one of the ways they are extending their facilities to more visitors.
“We are very pleased to have entered into this arrangement with Deeside Activity Park which will attract even more visitors to enjoy our course”, said Joyce Wilson, the Lady Captain.
The Park and the Club are hoping that this venture will last for a long time with benefits for both organisations and encourage more people to the Deeside area to enjoy the wide range of sporting and recreational activities on offer.

Deeside Event a Right Royal Success
A three-day Deeside extravaganza paying tribute to legendary Scots king Macbeth has been hailed as a royal success – and plans are already in the pipeline to repeat the event next year.
For the second year running, Deeside Activity Park at Dess near Aboyne was the venue for Macbethfest featuring a running event, beer festival and ceilidh. The venue lies a stone’s throw from the site where King Macbeth is said to have been killed at the Battle of Lumphanan in 1057.
Macbethfest 2010 kicked off with a running event in conjunction with Running the Highlands last Wednesday (May 12th). The event – which attracted 96 competitors – was won by Team Simpson Buchan comprising Rhona Buchan and her daughter and sons Ellie, Doug and Robbie who finished in 69 minutes, 45 seconds. Special congratulations went to Ewen McMillan who, at the age of just 11, completed the course in 18 minutes, 12 seconds.
On Friday (May 14th) beers from the renowned Deeside Brewery and guest beers from around Scotland were the focus for the second ever Macbethfest beer festival while Saturday (May 15th) saw a ceilidh with local band and T in the Park regulars “Hogtie.”
Thirsty drinkers ensured that no less than 3,200 pints of beer were enjoyed during the event.
Macbethfest also raised £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support thanks to a raffle featuring a luxury food hamper created using kind donations from Deeside Activity Park’s suppliers.
Throughout the Friday and Saturday events, a spit roast served up beef from the well known Cairnton Aberdeen Angus cattle herd run by Deeside Activity Park proprietor, Ken Howie.
Commenting on the success of Macbethfest 2010, Ken Howie said: “It was great to be joined by so many visitors from throughout the area for what was without doubt the most successful Macbethfest to date and we look forward to building on the success of the event in 2011.”

Deeside Earth Day draws in lots of support
A well known event that has been run for the past 40 years and in many different countries had its own local mini event on Saturday. Earth Day which highlights the importance of using the worlds dwindling resources responsibly, started in the USA in the 1970’s and is now recognised all over the world. It tries to draw attention to some of today’s most important issues, like recycling and using other forms of energy.
Deeside Activity Park in Dess, Aboyne ran their own local Earth Day on Saturday drawing in over 500 visitors throughout the day. Many exhibitors including donside heating, Aberdeenshire Waste Aware and Sustainability, Forestry Commission, G5 Technologies, Aberdeen City Waste Aware, Aberdeen Forward, Andrew Nicol Forestry Consultants, DWR Architecture, Roy Cowie, Albert Middleton Pallet Recycling, Phase NRG, Ian Ballantyne, Puffin Pellets and Nuergy joined 20 car boots for the day. Cllr Peter Argyle officially opened the day and commented on how important it was to get the message out there about recycling and alternative energy resources.
‘It was a busy day and was great to see the enthusiastic car booters selling lots of items that could easily just have been thrown away! It was important for us to have a car boot sale here on the day so that not only local companies could get involved but the local people were also included. A car boot sale is the ultimate recycling experience.’ Commented Fiona McIver Sales and Marketing for the park. The park itself has just installed a wood pellet Biomass boiler to heat all its buildings onsite alongside an automatic composter, dealing with all our food and green waste. It was a day to show these off as they are usually in the background and let people know how they can themselves get involved and become a little greener in both their homes and businesses! Ken Howie park owner and Kenny Patterson from Nuergy were on hand to give guided tours and answer everyone’s questions.
‘It is all very well people knowing that they should be recycling and using the world’s resources responsibly but the day gave people the opportunity to ask the experts how they do this, and everyone went home with the tools and knowledge on how to reuse, recycle and reduce their waste.’ Fiona said. ‘The park also harvests their rainwater, has a community recycling centre, uses low energy bulbs, and solar panels to charge the batteries for our clay pigeon ranges.
